6.22.17
it was the sun that first surrendered
to the failing light,
the sun burning itself up
in the evening
and when i looked up
i saw a sky like granulated gold
the dust of crystal and blood and fire
and i wept.
ten thousand years of solitude
could not change the beauty
of our world,
only i would be alone
and the rest would be as
it always was, as it is, as it will
remain when i’m dust.
but you’re gone for an hour,
for an hour i am alone
and without you
and i lose all hope.
it was the sun that first surrendered
this evening. but there will be endless
other evenings, endless duels
between me and the cosmic history
of the universe,
in the wasteland of afterdark,
we shall see
who will crack
first.
